You’ve unwrapped all of your gifts. The big Christmas dinner is over. Everyone is tired and a little bit let down from all of the excitement of The Big Day.
Or maybe not that. Maybe you’re just bored on a Saturday and you’re looking for something to watch.
Regardless of your situation, I’ve got you covered! Here are 5 movie suggestions for your holiday watching.
Single All the Way (Netflix) - What if a completely predictable, formulaic Christmas rom-com, but gay? This movie is exactly what you’re looking for. Peter (Michael Urie) goes home for Christmas, single again, so he takes his roommate, Nick (Philemon Chambers), to pose as his boyfriend to allay the many questions that his family has about his relationship status. Perfect set-up for hijinks. Kathy Najimy plays Peter’s mom, and she has read some books! Jennifer Coolidge is Aunt Sandy, and she is ready to put on the best Christmas pageant ever, even if she has to play all of the roles! This isn’t a movie that’s winning any awards, but it’s a perfect Christmas rom-com.
Santa Jaws (Amazon Prime) - What happens when a kid gets a magic pen that brings his Christmas shark cartoon to life? This movie. If B-movie comedy horror is your jam, this movie will absolutely hit the spot. I watched this one with my older kids last year and we all had a blast. Kevin McAllister has nothing on the innovation of this team of shark hunters.
8-Bit Christmas (HBO Max) - When Jack Doyle (Neil Patrick Harris) wants to teach his daughter Annie (Sophia Reid-Gantzert) about the true meaning of Christmas, he tells her about the year he wanted a Nintendo Entertainment System for Christmas. Taking place in the late 80’s, this movie is filled to the brim with nostalgia points. It has a lot of goofy John Hughes-esque capers in it, as well as a lovely little pay-off at the end. The best part of this movie is definitely the conversations it can inspire about your own favorite Christmas memories.
The Family Stone (rent on Amazon) - Maybe nostalgia feels more like watching a Christmas classic, and if that’s the case, The Family Stone is a great choice. This movie has some absolutely beautiful performances in it. It’s genuinely funny, genuinely heart-felt, and is a lovely movie to watch especially if you don’t feel like you fit in with your family. This movie hits a lot of emotions and does it to near perfection.
Pig (Hulu) - Maybe you’re not in the mood for a Christmas movie. Maybe this second pandemic year has just worn on you and celebration isn’t in the cards. Pig might be the movie for you. Starting Nicholas Cage, this movie is a stunning exploration of various expressions of grief, centered on the story of a man searching for his stolen truffle pig. This was one of my absolute favorite movies of 2021 and if you’re not feeling Christmas-y today, this may be a balm.
Whatever your story today, I hope you have a moment of peace and connection. Merry Christmas!
