I primarily watch feature-length movies, but during Tribeca, I had the opportunity to watch several short films. One that really caught my attention was A Family Guide to Hunting, directed by Zao Wang.Â
The story is part family drama, part horror film, part comedy. Despite its runtime of only 14 minutes, the story is packed with humor and drama, taking the audience on a delightful and, at times, graphic journey. The performances from Margaret Cho, Kahyun Kim, Keong Sim, and Craig Newman are all well done, really taking us inside those characters for the brief time that we spend with them. The sound design is great and adds to the visceral nature of the viewing experience.Â
I had an opportunity to chat with the writer and director, Zao Wang, along with producers Joyce Liu-Countryman and Louise Barretto. We discussed working on a short film compared to working on a feature-length film. We talked about the title of the film and about getting into Tribeca.
Take a look at the video below for our conversation, and follow the film on Instagram for opportunities to see the movie!
