Hello, friends! Glad to see you back here. I hope you had an easy week. I am super ready for a few days off for the holiday. But first, let me share a few of my favorite things from this week!
The Barbie Trailer - I am so excited for this movie. I have been since the first teaser came out. Heck, I’ve probably been excited since I heard Greta Gerwig was directing it. But this trailer just amped that excitement up to an 11. Right now this is supposed to open the same weekend as Nolan’s new movie “Oppenheimer,” and I’m telling you right now, the review you will see here the following Tuesday will be for “Barbie.” Also, Hari Nef is one of the Barbies and I am losing my mind about that. Speaking of that…
Hari Nef’s letter to Greta Gerwig - I first saw Nef in 2018’s “Assassination Nation.” She is fantastic, and as the mom of a trans kids, I am always thrilled to see trans people in film. So seeing that she was cast as a Barbie was just fantastic news. But then seeing the letter Nef sent to Gerwig asking her to move the shooting schedule just made my day. It’s worth reading all of what she shared, but this bit made me love her all the more: “Identity politics and cinema aren’t my favorite combination, but the name BARBIE looms large over every American woman. Barbie’s the standard; she’s The Girl; she’s certainly THE doll.” Anyway, I am thrilled that she’s a Barbie. And speaking of trans girls…
This little moment from the new Spider-verse trailer - It’s a “blink and you’ll miss it” flash on the screen, but sharp eyed viewers spotted this in Gwen’s room. In light of so many anti-trans bills being passed right now, seeing this sweet “protect trans kids” sign was just awesome. Spider-man said “trans rights.”
Just the Nicest Couple - I’ve been doing lots of driving over the past few weeks for the musical, so I’ve been listening to some audiobooks. I just finished Mary Kubica’s latest book, “Just the Nicest Couple.” I like her stuff. Not super taxing, pretty straightforward storytelling, but compelling enough to keep me engaged. If you’re looking for an interesting mystery/thriller, this one is worth checking out.
Tell me about your week. What was good in it? Do you have any plans for your weekend?
