Interview with Keri Pickett and Dawn Mikkelson about documentary Uncle Roy

Keri Pickett wants all of us to get to know her uncle Roy Blakey. He started as a professional ice skater, later becoming a renowned photographer, specializing in male nudes. When Roy developed dementia, Keri wanted to preserve his legacy, and began work on her latest documentary, Uncle Roy. Here is the trailer for the film.
The film explores Roy’s work through archival footage and numerous pieces that have been written about him. It also highlights a man who lived openly as a gay man during difficult times, highlighting how the LGBTQ community has always existed, particularly in a season when that community is experiencing an uptick in animosity at a political level.
I spoke with Keri Prickett and producer Dawn Mikkelson about Uncle Roy and their Kickstarter to support it. We talk about the need to tell queer stories, how Keri and Dawn discovered each other, and how special some of the Kickstarter backing gifts are.
