Did you see “Hillbilly Elegy”? That was a film (and autobiography of sorts) depicting Appalachia. Curious what you thought of it. I felt like even with the amazing cast (Glenn Close, Amy Adams) I couldn’t get into it
I skipped it. I had some issues with the book, not unlike a lot of other Appalachians, and it looked a lot more like caricatures than an actual look at the people. I would absolutely recommend the documentaries O Pioneer or King Coal - both by and about Appalachians (and West Virginians specifically). They're both on the film festival circuit right now, but if either are playing near you, I highly recommend them. Both gorgeous films.
Thanks for the recommendations on "O Pioneer" and "King Coal" - And agreed on the caricature representation. Plus, there's something about authenticity in casting. I haven't watched the adaptation yet of "All the Light We Cannot See," but it's one of my top books of all time, but I'm intrigued and attracted to the casting of a blind lead in the key role. I love this and I think it tells a better story onscreen.
