I saw this over the weekend with my tween daughter and was the same age my daughter was when the original came out. Agreed they stuck to the original faithfully. Think it could have been shorter. It’s like a 2 hour run time. The songs, actors and cinematography were all beautiful but it just didn’t feel like a “wow” - then again I have my own feelings about the original Hans Christian Andersen story and his using writing as a vehicle to seek revenge on women he felt rejected him, notably the opera singer Jenny Lind, for whole Ariel is loosely based on, also featured in “The Greatest Showman”
